it's always interesting to see people's speed paints. you have a great sense of form and texturing, but i find the pose lacking somewhat. one of the lessons we got in my animation class was that characters shouldn't have conversations standing up like sticks. depending on the character's emotions you could have the character striding forward or cringing backward, etc. i get your character, riker, is tough and not impressed by the gun but maybe the female could be leaning forward a bit trying to be intimidating. just a thought.
Technically they have no form, but their 'race' usually appears as quadrupeds or bipeds or an amorphous combination of black whatever. Like, their specific look is unique to them, that's what they end up looking like when they take on a physical form in order to interact, but they're pretty much living black holes that can take on whatever form they want.
Oooohh wow things are starting to make sense now. I was always thinking that a lot of the creatures you drew were all separate species. Now I see the creature in your journal, and your icon, those are Locks too C:
